As-Saffat

Waalssaffati saffan

By those [angels] lined up in rows

Faalzzajirati zajran

And those who drive [the clouds]

Faalttaliyati thikran

And those who recite the message

Inna ilahakum lawahidun

Indeed, your God is One

Rabbu alssamawati waalardi wama baynahuma warabbu almashariqi

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises

Inna zayyanna alssamaa alddunya bizeenatin alkawakibi

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

Wahifthan min kulli shaytanin maridin

And as protection against every rebellious devil

La yassammaAAoona ila almalai alaAAla wayuqthafoona min kulli janibin

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side

Duhooran walahum AAathabun wasibun

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment

Illa man khatifa alkhatfata faatbaAAahu shihabun thaqibun

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness]

Faistaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqna inna khalaqnahum min teenin lazibin

Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay

Bal AAajibta wayaskharoona

But you wonder, while they mock

Waitha thukkiroo la yathkuroona

And when they are reminded, they remember not

Waitha raaw ayatan yastaskhiroona

And when they see a sign, they ridicule

Waqaloo in hatha illa sihrun mubeenun

And say, "This is not but obvious magic

Aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected

Awaabaona alawwaloona

And our forefathers [as well]

Qul naAAam waantum dakhiroona

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible

Fainnama hiya zajratun wahidatun faitha hum yanthuroona

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing

Waqaloo ya waylana hatha yawmu alddeeni

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense

Hatha yawmu alfasli allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona

[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny

Ohshuroo allatheena thalamoo waazwajahum wama kanoo yaAAbudoona

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship

Min dooni Allahi faihdoohum ila sirati aljaheemi

Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

Waqifoohum innahum masooloona

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned

Ma lakum la tanasaroona

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other

Bal humu alyawma mustaslimoona

But they, that Day, are in surrender

Waaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona

And they will approach one another blaming each other

Qaloo innakum kuntum tatoonana AAani alyameeni

They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right

Qaloo bal lam takoonoo mumineena

The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers

Wama kana lana AAalaykum min sultanin bal kuntum qawman tagheena

And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people

Fahaqqa AAalayna qawlu rabbina inna lathaiqoona

So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment]

Faaghwaynakum inna kunna ghaweena

And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators

Fainnahum yawmaithin fee alAAathabi mushtarikoona

So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment

Inna kathalika nafAAalu bialmujrimeena

Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals

Innahum kanoo itha qeela lahum la ilaha illa Allahu yastakbiroona

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant

Wayaqooloona ainna latarikoo alihatina lishaAAirin majnoonin

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet

Bal jaa bialhaqqi wasaddaqa almursaleena

Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers

Innakum lathaiqoo alAAathabi alaleemi

Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment

Wama tujzawna illa ma kuntum taAAmaloona

And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do

Illa AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena

But not the chosen servants of Allah

Olaika lahum rizqun maAAloomun

Those will have a provision determined

Fawakihu wahum mukramoona

Fruits; and they will be honored

Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi

In gardens of pleasure

AAala sururin mutaqabileena

On thrones facing one another

Yutafu AAalayhim bikasin min maAAeenin

There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring

Baydaa laththatin lilshsharibeena

White and delicious to the drinkers

La feeha ghawlun wala hum AAanha yunzafoona

No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated

WaAAindahum qasiratu alttarfi AAeenun

And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes

Kaannahunna baydun maknoonun

As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected

Faaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other

Qala qailun minhum innee kana lee qareenun

A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth]

Yaqoolu ainnaka lamina almusaddiqeena

Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

Aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamadeenoona

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed

Qala hal antum muttaliAAoona

He will say, "Would you [care to] look

FaittalaAAa faraahu fee sawai aljaheemi

And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire

Qala taAllahi in kidta laturdeeni

He will say, "By Allah, you almost ruined me

Walawla niAAmatu rabbee lakuntu mina almuhdareena

If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell]

Afama nahnu bimayyiteena

Then, are we not to die

Illa mawtatana aloola wama nahnu bimuAAaththabeena

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished

Inna hatha lahuwa alfawzu alAAatheemu

Indeed, this is the great attainment

Limithli hatha falyaAAmali alAAamiloona

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work

Athalika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu alzzaqqoomi

Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum

Inna jaAAalnaha fitnatan lilththalimeena

Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers

Innaha shajaratun takhruju fee asli aljaheemi

Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire

TalAAuha kaannahu ruoosu alshshayateeni

Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils

Fainnahum laakiloona minha famalioona minha albutoona

And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies

Thumma inna lahum AAalayha lashawban min hameemin

Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water

Thumma inna marjiAAahum laila aljaheemi

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire

Innahum alfaw abaahum dalleena

Indeed they found their fathers astray

Fahum AAala atharihim yuhraAAoona

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps

Walaqad dalla qablahum aktharu alawwaleena

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples

Walaqad arsalna feehim munthireena

And We had already sent among them warners

Faonthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu almunthareena

Then look how was the end of those who were warned

Illa AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena

But not the chosen servants of Allah

Walaqad nadana noohun falaniAAma almujeeboona

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders

Wanajjaynahu waahlahu mina alkarbi alAAatheemi

And We saved him and his family from the great affliction

WajaAAalna thurriyyatahu humu albaqeena

And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

Watarakna AAalayhi fee alakhireena

And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations

Salamun AAala noohin fee alAAalameena

Peace upon Noah among the worlds

Inna kathalika najzee almuhsineena

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

Innahu min AAibadina almumineena

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants

Thumma aghraqna alakhareena

Then We drowned the disbelievers

Wainna min sheeAAatihi laibraheema

And indeed, among his kind was Abraham

Ith jaa rabbahu biqalbin saleemin

When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

Ith qala liabeehi waqawmihi matha taAAbudoona

[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship

Aifkan alihatan doona Allahi tureedoona

Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allah you desire

Fama thannukum birabbi alAAalameena

Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds

Fanathara nathratan fee alnnujoomi

And he cast a look at the stars

Faqala innee saqeemun

And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill

Fatawallaw AAanhu mudbireena

So they turned away from him, departing

Faragha ila alihatihim faqala ala takuloona

Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat

Ma lakum la tantiqoona

What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak

Faragha AAalayhim darban bialyameeni

And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand

Faaqbaloo ilayhi yaziffoona

Then the people came toward him, hastening

Qala ataAAbudoona ma tanhitoona

He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve

WaAllahu khalaqakum wama taAAmaloona

While Allah created you and that which you do

Qaloo ibnoo lahu bunyanan faalqoohu fee aljaheemi

They said, "Construct for him a furnace and throw him into the burning fire

Faaradoo bihi kaydan fajaAAalnahumu alasfaleena

And they intended for him a plan, but We made them the most debased

Waqala innee thahibun ila rabbee sayahdeeni

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me

Rabbi hab lee mina alssaliheena

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous

Fabashsharnahu bighulamin haleemin

So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy

Falamma balagha maAAahu alssaAAya qala ya bunayya innee ara fee almanami annee athbahuka faonthur matha tara qala ya abati ifAAal ma tumaru satajidunee in shaa Allahu mina alssabireena

And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast

Falamma aslama watallahu liljabeeni

And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead

Wanadaynahu an ya ibraheemu

We called to him, "O Abraham

Qad saddaqta alrruya inna kathalika najzee almuhsineena

You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

Inna hatha lahuwa albalao almubeenu

Indeed, this was the clear trial

Wafadaynahu bithibhin AAatheemin

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice

Watarakna AAalayhi fee alakhireena

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations

Salamun AAala ibraheema

Peace upon Abraham

Kathalika najzee almuhsineena

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

Innahu min AAibadina almumineena

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants

Wabashsharnahu biishaqa nabiyyan mina alssaliheena

And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous

Wabarakna AAalayhi waAAala ishaqa wamin thurriyyatihima muhsinun wathalimun linafsihi mubeenun

And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself

Walaqad mananna AAala moosa waharoona

And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron

Wanajjaynahuma waqawmahuma mina alkarbi alAAatheemi

And We saved them and their people from the great affliction

Wanasarnahum fakanoo humu alghalibeena

And We supported them so it was they who overcame

Waataynahuma alkitaba almustabeena

And We gave them the explicit Scripture

Wahadaynahuma alssirata almustaqeema

And We guided them on the straight path

Watarakna AAalayhima fee alakhireena

And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations

Salamun AAala moosa waharoona

Peace upon Moses and Aaron

Inna kathalika najzee almuhsineena

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

Innahuma min AAibadina almumineena

Indeed, they were of Our believing servants

Wainna ilyasa lamina almursaleena

And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers

Ith qala liqawmihi ala tattaqoona

When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah

AtadAAoona baAAlan watatharoona ahsana alkhaliqeena

Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators

Allaha rabbakum warabba abaikumu alawwaleena

Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers

Fakaththaboohu fainnahum lamuhdaroona

And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment]

Illa AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena

Except the chosen servants of Allah

Watarakna AAalayhi fee alakhireena

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations

Salamun AAala il yaseena

Peace upon Elias

Inna kathalika najzee almuhsineena

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

Innahu min AAibadina almumineena

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants

Wainna lootan lamina almursaleena

And indeed, Lot was among the messengers

Ith najjaynahu waahlahu ajmaAAeena

[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all

Illa AAajoozan fee alghabireena

Except his wife among those who remained [with the evildoers]

Thumma dammarna alakhareena

Then We destroyed the others

Wainnakum latamurroona AAalayhim musbiheena

And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

Wabiallayli afala taAAqiloona

And at night. Then will you not use reason

Wainna yoonusa lamina almursaleena

And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers

Ith abaqa ila alfulki almashhooni

[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship

Fasahama fakana mina almudhadeena

And he drew lots and was among the losers

Failtaqamahu alhootu wahuwa muleemun

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy

Falawla annahu kana mina almusabbiheena

And had he not been of those who exalt Allah

Lalabitha fee batnihi ila yawmi yubAAathoona

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected

Fanabathnahu bialAAarai wahuwa saqeemun

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill

Waanbatna AAalayhi shajaratan min yaqteenin

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine

Waarsalnahu ila miati alfin aw yazeedoona

And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more

Faamanoo famattaAAnahum ila heenin

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time

Faistaftihim alirabbika albanatu walahumu albanoona

So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons

Am khalaqna almalaikata inathan wahum shahidoona

Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses

Ala innahum min ifkihim layaqooloona

Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say

Walada Allahu wainnahum lakathiboona

Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars

Astafa albanati AAala albaneena

Has He chosen daughters over sons

Ma lakum kayfa tahkumoona

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement

Afala tathakkaroona

Then will you not be reminded

Am lakum sultanun mubeenun

Or do you have a clear authority

Fatoo bikitabikum in kuntum sadiqeena

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful

WajaAAaloo baynahu wabayna aljinnati nasaban walaqad AAalimati aljinnatu innahum lamuhdaroona

And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment]

Subhana Allahi AAamma yasifoona

Exalted is Allah above what they describe

Illa AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena

Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin]

Fainnakum wama taAAbudoona

So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship

Ma antum AAalayhi bifatineena

You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

Illa man huwa sali aljaheemi

Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire

Wama minna illa lahu maqamun maAAloomun

[The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position

Wainna lanahnu alssaffoona

And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer]

Wainna lanahnu almusabbihoona

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah

Wain kanoo layaqooloona

And indeed, the disbelievers used to say

Law anna AAindana thikran mina alawwaleena

If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples

Lakunna AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena

We would have been the chosen servants of Allah

Fakafaroo bihi fasawfa yaAAlamoona

But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know

Walaqad sabaqat kalimatuna liAAibadina almursaleena

And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers

Innahum lahumu almansooroona

[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

Wainna jundana lahumu alghaliboona

And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome

Fatawalla AAanhum hatta heenin

So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time

Waabsirhum fasawfa yubsiroona

And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see

AfabiAAathabina yastaAAjiloona

Then for Our punishment are they impatient

Faitha nazala bisahatihim fasaa sabahu almunthareena

But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned

Watawalla AAanhum hatta heenin

And leave them for a time

Waabsir fasawfa yubsiroona

And see, for they are going to see

Subhana rabbika rabbi alAAizzati AAamma yasifoona

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe

Wasalamun AAala almursaleena

And peace upon the messengers

Waalhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena

And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds
